We are out in the field dodging rain showers and trying to get the Triticale cut, chopped, and covered as soon as possible, 300 acres in total! Triticale is a hybrid of Wheat and Rye. When harvested for cow feed, we make sure to get in the field just before the head of the plant starts to fully mature. Eric put Allie to work this afternoon, digging out a few buried culverts at the end of the field where our pivot crosses the Weldon ditch. It would be one thing if it were dry, but as heavy and deep as this mud was, Allie said something along the lines of, "This is a backhoe job, and I am not a backhoe" 😂 Unfortunately, to her dismay; the backhoe is currently out of commission so the Allie Elbow Grease will have to do for today! 💪🏼 #ontheranch

Congratulations are in store for Kirsten! This past Saturday, she graduated from West Texas A&M in Canyon, Texas, with a Bachelor of Science in Agribusiness. Kirsten is considering returning in the fall for a Master's program in Ag Media and Communications. Another vivid rainbow greeted us as we arrived at the ranch last week! But instead of a pot of gold at the end, we're looking at some liquid gold coming down the river! The extensive system of moisture that has been with us for the better part of a week is finally moving out. Here on the ranch, we received just shy of four inches in a 72-hour window! The entire South Platte River basin got a nice bump in their stream flows because of it. This surge in the river could not have come at a better time, as we are still seeing about 91% of the median in this year's snowpack waiting to melt. We love to see renewed optimism regarding water and drought in our area! ☔️ 🌊 #ontheranch #springweather

Right now, we have the planter in the shop until tomorrow! If the seed in the box gets wet, it can gum up the small parts, causing delays and inadequate spacing. Irrigation season is underway! We've been irrigating the triticale as the weather heats up; it seems to grow an inch overnight once May rolls around! But before we get too busy changing water and playing "keep the sprinklers going" all summer, Eric thought it was the perfect opportunity to reroute a ditch before they send water down for the first time this season. The guys were hard at work labeling over 240 packages of our smoked Beef Sticks for the 25th Annual Take a Kid Fishing Days this weekend hosted by Tomky Fish Farms.

Our own kids participated in the Take a Kid Fishing Days derby when they were younger (swipe left to see Tyler & Allie with their catch at the 2012 derby🎣) and we appreciate this event's focus on spending quality family time while enjoying the great outdoors.

This event is nationally recognized as the number one children's fishing derby in the United States! And, it's hosted by our good friends, Tracy and Sabrina Tomky. We love giving back to our community and are proud to be one of the many local sponsors this great event.

Each lucky participant in this weekend's event will enjoy our Beef Sticks along with other goodies and a small fishing-related prize for attending. Plus, there are prizes awarded for the top three weigh-ins.

Our fall herd preg check is underway! As the spring herd is busy calving, the cattle from the fall herd are making their way through the squeeze chute to check to make sure they are bred. If they aren't, we need to decide if the animal should be given another chance to have a calf in the alternate herd or sold.
