This is not something we like to find as we drive the alleyways in the morning! Eric knew this fence line in between pens 6 and 7 would need to be replaced when time and space in the feedlot allowed. Earlier in the week, we spent a good amount of time moving cattle around the feedlot to create enough space to bring the spring cows in to be Preg-checked. The cattle in the feedlot must not have liked all of the migration and had some other ideas for how our day would go. Thanksgiving may be the perfect excuse to get the whole family together for a big meal, but for Morgan and Kirsten it was the perfect excuse to show how thankful they are for both Milkshake and Gerald. Kirsten made a not so successful attempt to give Gerald a piece of pumpkin pie, as both him and Milkshake were more interested in the corn silage they brought them. By the end of their Thanksgiving dinner, all of the other cows had made their way over to see what goodies they were missing out on.

As our day came to a close here on the ranch, we couldn't help but snap a quick picture of the horses on our way home from work. Today they got turned out on one of the alfalfa corners to give the pasture a break during the winter months. Even though the amount of space they have to move around throughout the day decreases quite a bit by doing this, they don't seem to mind, as they are happy to have a diet change for a few months. Since we do not put up a fourth cutting of hay, the regrowth the fields get after third cutting is the perfect forage to graze during the colder months without having to keep them in pens and feed them daily.

Over the weekend, Jeff and Kirsten were out riding

Over the weekend, Jeff and Kirsten were out riding through the herd after chores, and an old friend wandered over to say hello! Gerald is one of the friendliest, most tame animals on the entire ranch. He even has a few of the dogs beat! Gerald has made quite a few appearances on social before, including as our stand-in model for educational beef cut videos. Gerald was raised as a bottle baby, allowing Kirsten to show him as much love and attention as he would allow. That indeed paid off, as Gerald and our other pasture princess, Milkshake, will run up to you and beg for pets or even a treat if they are lucky! It looked a lot colder than it actually was, with the overnight low hovering around 20; we know a seasonal polar cold snap is likely in the cards for later on this winter, so we aren't complaining. The holiday hustle has begun! Kathy has some extra hands this season—meet Kimber, our new holiday helper! She and Kathy have been busy packing and shipping Prime Rib orders to ensure they reach customers nationwide in time for holiday feasts.🥩✨🎄

We had some deja vu this morning after we covered one of our silage piles for the second time! A large gust of wind overnight turned the sheet of plastic into a sail, but it didn't take much wind to send the plastic whipping through the air! Right now, we are a little sparse on the tires this year after another year of yields that are near record-setting. Thankfully, we have some spare tractor weights and railroad ties to get us through the next few weeks as we continue to make a dent in the pile with all of the new cattle we've brought into the feedlot.
