Corn harvest is still going strong, and we are hoping to be wrapping up the final field sometime next week. We finished chopping Silage earlier than expected, which allowed us ample time to convert the chopper to run earlage and ensure the moisture would be perfect when we started. Eric was keeping a close eye on the tons/acre on the Greenstar display to help manage the yields and know where we can improve irrigation, fertilixer etc the following year. Earlage differs from Silage in that only the ear of the corn is chopped and harvested, whereas the entire stalk of the plant is chopped and harvested for Silage. With the hustle and bustle of harvest in full swing and branding day right around the corner, Eric's daily driver was looking a little rough. He spent the day Sunday trying to tidy up his mobile office and giving it the farm truck detail special. It might seem strange, but the best way to clean nearly all of the ranch vehicles is with a leaf blower or compressed air to get as much dirt out as possible. The miles and terrain that our ranch vehicles trek every day can result in a lot more clutter and dust than the average dirt road leaves behind. Harvest is in full swing here at the ranch with corn silage, ear corn and third cutting of alfalfa all ready to be chopped at the same time! We are getting ready to take a short intermission with corn silage🌽, as we transition over to harvest ear corn while we wait for our last circle of corn that got planted a bit after everything else to mature. While we wait, we have been hard at work getting our chopper switched over to harvest the corn in a different way, as well as ensuring all of our harvest trucks are running properly to help get us through the rest of 2024 harvest!

As we like to say here on the ranch, chaos loves company! This time of year seems to keep us plenty busy when everything is running smoothly, but it never seems to fail that we have unplanned projects pop up around the ranch as well. This week a water line in one of our pens started leaking 💦, meaning we had to dig a hole to find the source of the problem! Jeff and Berrie were hard at work getting the line fixed before we start getting weaned calves into the feedlot next month and all of our pens become occupied.

It's amazing what a little bit of TLC and a good feed ration can do! We want to reintroduce everyone to Buddy! In 2022, Buddy found himself in Tyler's backyard after Eric and Jodi rescued him from the pasture. He is actually a calf from that year's fall herd and spent the majority of the season basking in the sun before the brutal winter we endured had him moved into the barn full-time. While he is not even remotely as tame as Gerald, he is still a pretty chill steer. We just barely kicked off our Silage harvest for 2024 these last few days, and as Eric checked our next field for maturity and moisture, he stumbled upon this little critter! This is a Hognose snake and is relatively common on the eastern plains of Colorado, but we tend to see their cousins more often, such as the prairie rattlesnake and bull snake. The cuteness on the ranch continues! We are slowly getting more and more calves on the ground, and we could not be happier to see happy and healthy calves hitting the ground. Both the fall cows and calves are very content out on pasture right now, but wouldn't complain about getting some cooler weather in. Calving during the fall may be less stressful for us, as we do not have to worry about the harsh winter conditions, but the heat can be a little hard on newborn calves, so we are sure the cooler weather coming our way in the next few months will be the relief this group has been asking for!

It's that time of year where we may be spending more time fixing the sprinklers than they do running! With irrigation season slowly coming to a close, the sprinklers are getting a bit tired of having to drag themselves through the mud, which leaves us with plenty of broken parts to fix. This afternoon Eric took Connor out to one of our pivots and figured it would be a good time to teach him to fix and rewire a center drive motor. While the actual fixing of the sprinkler isn't to bad, standing in the middle of a cornfield on a 90 degree day is not for the faint of heart!
