Milkshake had her calf out in the pasture earlier

Milkshake had her calf out in the pasture earlier in the Spring calving season — and it didn’t exactly go by the book. The calf was big and had one front foot back, which can make things tricky even for a seasoned cow like her.

Eric found her in the early stages of labor while checking the rest of the cows in the pasture. He gave her some space and time to work, then returned about 30–45 minutes later. When she hadn’t progressed, her expression made it clear — she was waiting for help.

With no supplies on hand, he had to step in and give her a hand right there in the pasture. Thankfully, Milkshake is calm, gentle, and trusting — she stood still and let him help, no fuss.

Both mom and baby are doing great, and Milkshake took to her calf right away — just like she always does.

Some of the photos might be a little gritty, but they’re real. This is ranch life — sometimes it’s messy, but it’s also pretty incredible to witness the start of new life.

Loaded up one of our older bulls and hauled him to the sale last week. 🐂

Bulls don’t come with an expiration date, but their useful years vary — especially when they’re working as hard as ours do. With two herds to cover, they get used a bit more intensely here than in some operations.

We retire them for different reasons: age, injury, or when fertility starts to drop off. On average, each bull breeds 22 to 27 cows a year — it’s a big job, and not every bull stays up to the task long-term.

We definitely appreciate the work they put in while they’re here.

Oat planting wrapped up this week — a little sun

Oat planting wrapped up this week — a little sunshine, a light breeze, and a full day in the tractor made for a good finish. ☀️🌾

Kirsten filled the drill to get things ready earlier in the week and Kathy spent the day drilling oats. With so little rainfall this spring and pastures still slow to recover from last year’s drought, about 130 acres of oats were planted as a backup plan. If the pastures don’t bounce back, this gives us another way to keep our cattle fed. Being flexible and planning ahead is a big part of this business.

Oats work well in rations for growing calves or maintaining condition in the herd. The plan is to chop them for silage before they mature. If the rain shows up, there’s a chance to graze the oats or plant another crop into them later.

We’re getting the planter tuned up and ready to roll. Over the next week, we’ll start putting corn seed in the ground, covering about 500–600 acres.

We’re a little late, but we want to wish a very happy birthday to Dana! 🎉 Her birthday was April 21, and we sure have missed her while she’s been recovering from a broken arm.

Dana is such a huge help around here, especially packing and shipping all of your beef orders each week. Kathy (with a little help from Connor when he’s not busy ranching!) has been holding down the fort, but we can't wait to have Dana back next week!

Last night, Kathy and Connor attended the Rams Against Hunger Appreciation Reception at CSU (Kathy is pictured here with Michael Buttram, basic needs program manager at CSU). It was such a special evening, celebrating all the ways this program makes a difference for students. 🤍

Connor especially enjoyed getting to visit with people and talk about life beyond the farm for a change!

One interesting fact we learned — for every additional meal a student can add to their day, their GPA can increase by about 0.034 (give or take a little). Being food secure truly changes lives.

We’re honored to be a small part of that mission, alongside so many others who donate their time, resources, and support. Thank you, @csu.ramsagainsthunger, for letting us be part of your community.

Can you spot the calf in the herd of heifers? While calving out heifers has its highs and lows, it is always interesting to see how they react to new calves hitting the ground. Some heifers take to the new mom life rather quickly, while some take some time to warm up to the new rugrat they have following them around. We were glad this heifer took to her calf from the get go and didn't let the surrounding heifers licking on her calf bother her!

Not only can you purchase our individual cuts of beef and our scented tallow balms directly from the store, but they also sell handmade soaps and candles, spices, whole foods, and much more!

While the store was established in 2023, the business has recently undergone a change of ownership, one we are proud to say is very close to the family. Earlier this month Chris & Becky Weimer purchased the business, and they are working hard to bring in new products and are excited to start this new venture!

They are open from 10a.m. to 5p.m. Tuesday through Saturday, so stop in and say hi next time you are in town!
