The cuteness on the ranch continues! We are slowly getting more and more calves on the ground, and we could not be happier to see happy and healthy calves hitting the ground. Both the fall cows and calves are very content out on pasture right now, but wouldn't complain about getting some cooler weather in. Calving during the fall may be less stressful for us, as we do not have to worry about the harsh winter conditions, but the heat can be a little hard on newborn calves, so we are sure the cooler weather coming our way in the next few months will be the relief this group has been asking for!

It's that time of year where we may be spending more time fixing the sprinklers than they do running! With irrigation season slowly coming to a close, the sprinklers are getting a bit tired of having to drag themselves through the mud, which leaves us with plenty of broken parts to fix. This afternoon Eric took Connor out to one of our pivots and figured it would be a good time to teach him to fix and rewire a center drive motor. While the actual fixing of the sprinkler isn't to bad, standing in the middle of a cornfield on a 90 degree day is not for the faint of heart!

Eric, Jodi and Kathy spent this past weekend in Riverton, Wyoming at the @rendezvous_city_beef_roundup. Not only did they have a booth set up for the public to sample our beef sticks and summer sausage along with different products available for purchase, but they also took Ribeye steaks, New York Strip steaks, and Sirloin Steaks to be entered into the "Best Beef in the West" Judging competition. All the beef in our category was prepared by the same chef and was judged by a panel of about six judges that sampled each producer's steak. We ended up 3rd out of nearly 35 contestants! We were thrilled to have the opportunity to participate in such a fun event, and hope we have the chance to participate next year!

We would like everyone to meet the newest farm dog on the ranch, Mesa! Kirsten didn't waste any time getting her puppy broke into ranch life, as she's already helped tag calves, check yearlings on the four wheeler, and has already spent plenty of time running around getting to see all of the sights the ranch has to offer.

The concrete project continues! We had the concrete truck out this afternoon to get the rest of the concrete poured in our cattle pens. As soon as it dries out, and we get the tank put back and hooked up, this pen will be ready for cattle! As you can see in the pictures, we approached this project as the "farmer" way to do things, pouring the concrete without forms and creating a sloped edge with our shovels!

We are always starting new projects around the ran

We are always starting new projects around the ranch, trying to keep up with Eric's to-do list. With fewer cattle in the pens this time of year, we spent the week tearing out the water tank and concrete pad in one of the cattle pens. The project initially started trying to figure out what was wrong with the drain attached to the tank, as it seems to have issues draining in the winter. Turns out, nothing is wrong with the drain itself, but rather the way the tank sat on the concrete and how it attached to the drain! Now that we have that issue resolved, we are getting new concrete poured for the tank to sit on, and a pad in the next few days for the cattle to stand on without creating a muddy mess next to the tank!

38 Special said it best: I want you back where you belong! We have been echoing that for the last month, as this is now the THIRD time we have had to get this escape artist of a bull out of the neighbor's and back into our pasture. We're not pointing all the blame at him, as the fence with our neighbors also crosses the ditch and marshy low areas that seep back towards the river, creating a less-than-ideal fence line. We had a different Bull a few years ago, aptly named "Roameo" due to his roaming demeanor. We were getting tired of trying to track down this want-to-be drifter and installed an electric hot wire across that should keep him in with the herd. Any name suggestions for this guy? While Jeff was checking cows in the pasture this morning, he came across one of our favorites who just so happened to be looking for some mineral on the back of Jeff's pickup. Sadly, Milkshake was a bit disappointed to find him empty handed! Looks like we will have to send him out with a few goods on his next trip north to make up for it!

Last week we had Michael Buttram, the basic needs

Last week we had Michael Buttram, the basic needs program manager, for Colorado State University's 🐏 Rams Against Hunger food pantry come out to the ranch to pick up another load of beef. This program supports individuals of the student body who struggle to meet their dietary needs while attending school. We donated nearly 700 pounds of beef that while still in great condition, needed to be put to use before it reached the end of its useful life. We are happy to continue to support programs like this one, that are ensuring the health and wellbeing of CSU students working to obtain their degree!
