We received a new load of our Mineral supplement this morning. We add minerals into the feed rations to help cattle with their natural metabolic and digestive processes, promoting good health! Similar to a multivitamin or supplement for humans. Berrie and Connor are helping move the mineral into the bay on the far left. We are finally starting to get a few more babies on the ground! Today, Connor noticed a calf on the wrong side of the barbed wire fence during chores. Mom was getting a little nervous that she couldn't get to her baby. This past week we've had numerous large cottonwood trees removed from different areas of the ranch. A portion of these trees date back to when Edward R. Christensen first set his sights on Weldon Valley back in 1923. Since then, they have grown to be a nuisance. As beautiful as these trees were, they were becoming dangerous with their size and age. Snowcones anyone? 🍧 We had some of our spring cows picking and licking the melting snow drifts near the fence line. Cattle are known to eat snow to survive in extreme conditions. However, this cow was only about half a mile from their tank in the feedlot. Maybe she didn't want to fight for a spot at the tank? We had a fun surprise over the weekend when we went out to feed! The crew noticed a suspiciously large cow pie with a white face; what could that be? 🤔 As it turns out, it's the first calf of 2023! This little guy was left alone while mom went to eat. Our spring herd of cattle technically shouldn't start calving for a few more weeks. Why did the cattle cross the river? To get home to the ranch of course! Yesterday we drove our fall herd home before the latest round of snow. We opted to drive the herd home as opposed to loading them up and hauling them over several trips. These cattle made about a nine-mile journey navigating county roads and even crossing the South Platte river for the home stretch. As the crew finished morning chores yesterday, they noticed an unexpected visitor had made his way into the feed shed. A male pheasant with a set of peepers/blinders was a little disoriented. In pheasants, blinders are used to reduce confrontation between other domestic birds. This guy must've just gotten lost along his way here.
