Our Spring herd is nearly two-thirds of the way through calving! While we are excited to have these cute faces running around the pasture, the tall grass left over from last year makes herd checks a little more difficult and requires us to be extra careful as to not run over any calves hiding from the wind. We are crossing our fingers the last third of them decide to make an appearance as branding is only two weeks away!

A little over a week ago Jeff and Helen welcomed Simon to their herd, and we couldn't be more excited to have this colt running around! This cutie got turned out for the first time a few days ago, and is having no trouble finding out how to use those long legs of his. While we think all of the calves running around are pretty cute, it is a nice change of pace to see this little one out and about as the warmer weather is rolling in.

Kathy is back talking about the Flatiron Steak, also known as a Top Blade or Butlers' Steak, which comes from the Chuck Primal, as Gerald so kindly showed us! While this cut is considered lean, there is still consistent marbling throughout the cut. The Flatiron Steak comes from the second most tender muscle in the body, making it a perfect steak for the whole family to enjoy!

While this weekend's forecast doesn't call for good farming weather, Earlier in the week, Kirsten started in the 8200 and our stalk chopper. The corn fields that we harvested as earlage at the end of last fall are used for late winter grazing. The forage harvests only the ears, leaving behind a large portion of the plant.
