Every set of calves we get into the feed yard gets Every set of calves we get into the feed yard gets run through the chute about 24 hours after arrival. This allows us to tag each animal and put them in our system, give them arrival vaccinations, and pour them to get rid of any worms or lice they may be carrying. Putting an EID or Electronic Identification Tag helps us so that we can better track where we move them, as well as their health. After receiving their arrival vaccinations, they get put back in their pen and are monitored daily to evaluate their health. Processing cattle tends to make the day move pretty quick, but it does require all hands on deck!

It was a cold Friday night at the end of January, It was a cold Friday night at the end of January, and the cows decided to take themselves on a tour of the Weldona school grounds and the surrounding small town. We custom-feed and background cattle for many, and this group apparently thought it was recess time, and it was only 8 degrees. ❄️

This is just a glimpse of the freezing cow-herding rodeo that followed. You can’t really blame the cows for trying, but it definitely made for a long, cold weekend keeping tabs on them.

It was a beautiful January Sunday, and mineral del It was a beautiful January Sunday, and mineral delivery day on the ranch.
Eric and Jodi delivered three tubs-nearly 800 pounds of mineral-to the pasture. Crazy to see Eric in shorts in January! While we’ve truly enjoyed this mild winter weather, we continue to pray for much-needed moisture to bless our land and livestock. 🙏🌾

We had ourselves an unwelcomed visitor in the live We had ourselves an unwelcomed visitor in the live trap this morning. 🦨 We have to set traps in the feed yard because the raccoons are hard on the plastic on the feed piles, which then causes the feed to go bad over time. Every once in a while, we happen to catch something other than a raccoon, and unfortunately for Jeff, he is the one who gets to relocate our friend here. Wish him luck!

Every once in a while the calves in the feed yard Every once in a while the calves in the feed yard are pretty good at escaping, and this guy did his best to blend in so we didn't find him. While having cattle in the feed and wandering around isn't ideal, it sure is interesting to see the places they end up!

Winter sunsets on the Eastern Plains of Colorado r Winter sunsets on the Eastern Plains of Colorado really are something special. The wide-open horizon, crisp air, and long shadows let those pinks, purples, and fiery oranges stretch endlessly across the sky; often made even richer by snow on the ground or a dusting of clouds. It’s a quiet, peaceful beauty, and one of those small moments that reminds you why life on the plains is so special. ☀️

Jeff had a little buddy join him while he checked Jeff had a little buddy join him while he checked electric fence today! While most caterpillars "hibernate" through the winter, the abnormally warm weather we have had this year allowed this guy to stay fairly active. Jeff's warm pickup made the perfect place to hang out for the afternoon, or so Kirsten thought! 😂

Every once in a while we find ourselves some prett Every once in a while we find ourselves some pretty good weekend help, and today was no exception. Tobyn spent the day hanging out at the ranch with Kathy, meaning he also got put to work. At the end of the day, he helped Kathy put calves away off of corn stalks, but we're pretty sure he came out just so he could drive the 4-wheeler around!

We want to express our gratitude to X2D Ranch Mini We want to express our gratitude to X2D Ranch Ministries (@x2dranchministries) and Dave Shumpert for allowing us to be a small part of a much bigger opportunity. Back in September, they brought us four steers they had been taking care of, for us to finish to slaughter. All the beef these four animals produce are going to families that are going through a hard time in the Ministries community that are in need of a quality food source, and where else can you find such an amazing source of protein! 🥩 While we aren't doing the hard work in this amazing project, we are thankful we were given the opportunity to contribute in a small way. Thank you to everyone involved for helping those in our community!

Corn silage often steams in cold weather because o Corn silage often steams in cold weather because of the sharp temperature contrast between the warm, fermenting silage and the cold outside air. Heat retained in the silage from microbial fermentation causes moisture to rise as water vapor, which becomes visible as steam when it meets the cold air. When the silage face is exposed, oxygen enters and can briefly reactivate yeasts and molds, creating additional heat and making the steam more noticeable. 🌽❄️

It's just one of those small but satisfying signs of winter feeding on the ranch.

About a month ago, in the middle of all the crazin About a month ago, in the middle of all the craziness we had going on, we got our spring cows hauled to corn stalks. While this process normally takes a few days, it is always good to see the cows get turned out and enjoy the winter months with a change in their diet! 🌽 After we got each trailer load of cattle unloaded, it didn't take them long to put their heads down and start grazing, which gives us peace of mind knowing they are happy where we have them!
