We are still as busy as ever getting earlage harve We are still as busy as ever getting earlage harvested and put up before winter arrives! This time of year we keep ourselves pretty busy between trying to get everything harvested and making sure our cows and calves as well as the cattle we are getting into the feedlot are taken care of to the best of our ability. Thankfully we have ourselves a pretty good crew who is up for the busy schedules and hard work. You can be sure to catch us in trucks and tractors for the next few weeks still! 🚜🚛

Eric has spent the month all over northern Colorad Eric has spent the month all over northern Colorado with the pickup and trailer helping load and ship calves to the ranch, meaning the flatbed pickup has had quite a bit of wear and tear to it the last couple of weeks. This pickup also spends most of the summer hauling cattle to the processor for our customers. That being said, we do routine maintenance to make sure we don't leave either of our fearless leaders stranded on the side of the road. Good thing Berrie doesn't mind a little shop time! 🔧

Fall calving didn't go as smoothly as we would've Fall calving didn't go as smoothly as we would've liked, leaving us with two bottle calves 🍼, but we did end up with a couple cute faces that get to hang out at the ranch for a while. One of these calves had a mom with some milk issues and was not able to care for her properly, while the other one was left with no mom (or at least we couldn't figure out who it was). Not knowing who the mother of a calf is, is frustrating for many reasons. It leaves us guessing if we have a bad mom who is willing to leave their calf, or if we had a set of twins, one of which didn't get accepted by mom. Either way we do what we have to and try to care for the calves to the best of our ability and keep them healthy until it's time to wean and go into the feedlot with the other calves their age!

Kathy took advantage of the rainy weather a few we Kathy took advantage of the rainy weather a few weeks ago that prevented us from getting much work done in the field by heading to Laramie to 307 Meat Company to pick up beef. While she picked up customer beef this trip that had to get shipped out, she'll be making another trip here soon to get everyone's holiday favorites! Keep an eye out for our flavored summer sausages to get fully restocked and ready for the holidays!

Doing a quick headcount to make sure everyone’s Doing a quick headcount to make sure everyone’s where they’re supposed to be. We have to admit, attendance has been pretty smooth lately since our escape artist, Red Rover, is back home and enjoying some much-deserved vacation time. For once, the cows behaved and stood just right, making counting a breeze-a rare sight indeed!

The very next night, when Eric went to check the wire across the ditch (the ditch gone out earlier that day), the cows were living their best life. Who says cows can’t play in the mud too? 🐮

Fall is officially upon us, as we've started to ge Fall is officially upon us, as we've started to get calves in that we are not only feeding out for the ranch, but also some that we are custom feeding for other ranchers. Every set of calves we get in gets run through the chute so we can tag them and put them in our system to track what comes in and out on the ranch, but also to help us monitor their health and wellbeing. Wish us luck as this is only the start and we are about to get a lot busier for about the next month!

The weekends are made for some down time and enjoy The weekends are made for some down time and enjoying good horses, cattle and some Colorado sunsets. While we all get a break from "work" on the weekends, we are always thankful for the hobbies we find joy in. Kathy, Jeff and Kirsten spent their weekend working their horses, and trying to enjoy as much sunlight as they can as the days keep getting shorter.

We gave the cows and calves in the Spring herd a b We gave the cows and calves in the Spring herd a bit of time in the yard to make sure they paired back up, and so we could keep an eye on the calves after their shots to make sure they all felt alright before taking them back out to pasture. They got moved to a different pasture from what they were in when we went and got them so that they have greener grass to munch on this fall thanks to all of the rain we've received. To get them where they needed to be, we had to take them through the horse pasture, meaning the ranch horses felt the need to lend a bit of a hand where they could! 🤣

The rain we got a few weeks ago put a pause on our The rain we got a few weeks ago put a pause on our ability to get into the fields to cut corn silage, so we found other ways to keep ourselves busy. Rather than sitting around waiting for the fields to dry out, we hit the pastures and brought the Spring herd home so we could precondition the calves and get them ready for weaning here in the next few weeks (or whenever we can find the time with ear corn still left to harvest). It was nice to take a break from sitting in tractors and trucks, and instead getting the horses out and taking them for a nice day out and about.

Another unusual find in the daily ranch life with Another unusual find in the daily ranch life with Eric 🐂✨

Eric was cleaning the screen on the center pivot when this unexpected little guy fell out! Since we pump surface water, there’s no shortage of foreign objects that can plug up the nozzles. That’s why preventative maintenance is a must to keep everything running smoothly.

This appears to be a freshwater medicinal leech - most likely the American medicinal leech. They’re found in ponds, marshes, and slow streams, with two suckers (one on each end). Adults usually range 4-6 inches when extended, but they can contract to half that size. These leeches are common to Eastern North America. They feed on blood from frogs, fish, and mammals 🤯

Ranch life never runs out of surprises!

Corn silage harvest has officially come to a close Corn silage harvest has officially come to a close, and we finished it up doing everyone's favorite job, covering the pile with plastic and tires! We covered the whole pile in one morning, and Eric even talked Allie into coming out to help (everyone was very thankful for the extra hands). While covering the pile isn't the most fun job on the ranch, it is important we get the whole thing covered as soon as we are finished getting everything cut. Covering the corn silage with plastic creates an oxygen-free environment allowing it to begin fermenting and preventing mold and spoilage. All of this ensures that we don't lose any of the nutrients over time, and creates a quality feed for our cattle that won't make them sick! Now on to ear corn for the foreseeable future! 🌽

We're happy to see both the cow and babies are healthy and thriving. It's rare to see both babies with mom at the same time, so we're pretty impressed that Jeff caught them all together!
