Berrie has spent a good part of the past week work Berrie has spent a good part of the past week working hard to get Jeff's pickup running in better shape. Aside from his normal preventative maintenance, Berrie has been replacing the engine in Jeff's pickup so that Jeff has a more reliable vehicle to use on the ranch. While his pickup has been running, it has had its fair share of issues and before calving starts here in about a month, everyone decided it was time to get his pickup fixed before he starts putting a lot more miles on it!

Who better to get a Sunday morning greeting from t Who better to get a Sunday morning greeting from than Gerald! This happy guy gave Jeff a lick or two this morning as he was checking water tanks for the Spring Cows. Gerald can be a little stand offish when he first sees you, but if you give him a minute he is in your pocket in no time! 🤣

At least for the foreseeable future, these guys can spend their time either sitting around or eating while they build up their energy to spend the summer back at work!

FLASHBACK...... to January 2023, when the snow was FLASHBACK...... to January 2023, when the snow was generous and the work was hard. ❄️
Drifts stacked high enough that we had to pull out the snow blower attachment just to clear a path to the feed bunks for the trucks. We’ve had a very mild winter this year, and while moisture is an absolute necessity, it usually doubles the workload, makes everything so much harder, and leads to much longer workdays. We always welcome it-but we’re not necessarily fans of the bitter cold that often comes with it.

Last week we endured the wind to take the Fall herd back up north to a set of sprinklers to graze for the next month. Jeff and Kirsten were happy they got to break out the horses for the day, and the cows were happy to not be cooped up!

With cows and calves being turned out on fields to With cows and calves being turned out on fields to graze, it can make treating sick calves difficult at times. If we aren't busy through the day, we often use horses to make catching the calves easier, but when we don't have the time to haul our horses around, we have to get creative. Jeff was ready to rope the sick calf and hold it while Kirsten gave it some medicine, but this particular calf was smart enough to keep its distance. Jeff is pretty good at having patience, so he let the calf go back to the herd as he slowly followed it until it quit running and he could rope it.

While Kirsten may have a hard time waking up in th While Kirsten may have a hard time waking up in the morning, Mesa has no problem getting out the door for work! Before running around outside and playing in the dirt (and some smelly feed) for the day, Mesa has to hang out with everyone at morning coffee. More often than not Mesa is in Jeff's lap faster than Kirsten can even make it in the door! 😂

Every set of calves we get into the feed yard gets Every set of calves we get into the feed yard gets run through the chute about 24 hours after arrival. This allows us to tag each animal and put them in our system, give them arrival vaccinations, and pour them to get rid of any worms or lice they may be carrying. Putting an EID or Electronic Identification Tag helps us so that we can better track where we move them, as well as their health. After receiving their arrival vaccinations, they get put back in their pen and are monitored daily to evaluate their health. Processing cattle tends to make the day move pretty quick, but it does require all hands on deck!

It was a cold Friday night at the end of January, It was a cold Friday night at the end of January, and the cows decided to take themselves on a tour of the Weldona school grounds and the surrounding small town. We custom-feed and background cattle for many, and this group apparently thought it was recess time, and it was only 8 degrees. ❄️

This is just a glimpse of the freezing cow-herding rodeo that followed. You can’t really blame the cows for trying, but it definitely made for a long, cold weekend keeping tabs on them.

Eric and Jodi delivered three tubs-nearly 800 pounds of mineral-to the pasture. Crazy to see Eric in shorts in January! While we’ve truly enjoyed this mild winter weather, we continue to pray for much-needed moisture to bless our land and livestock. 🙏🌾

We had ourselves an unwelcomed visitor in the live We had ourselves an unwelcomed visitor in the live trap this morning. 🦨 We have to set traps in the feed yard because the raccoons are hard on the plastic on the feed piles, which then causes the feed to go bad over time. Every once in a while, we happen to catch something other than a raccoon, and unfortunately for Jeff, he is the one who gets to relocate our friend here. Wish him luck!
