Over the past few weeks, we've had CHS out spreadi Over the past few weeks, we've had CHS out spreading pelleted fertilizer on our fields that have rye in them and the fields we plan to plant corn in. This piece of equipment puts out Nitrogen granules, which allows us to replenish what the past year's crops took out of the soil. Corn specifically takes quite a bit of nitrogen out of the soil to grow, so without rotating to a crop that puts nitrogen back in the soil such as alfalfa, we have to use other methods to make sure we are setting our crops up for success.

Yesterday we had Vet Tech students from Community Yesterday we had Vet Tech students from Community College of Denver come out and get some hands on experience with cattle. For the past few years, we have provided a location for these students to complete their lab with cattle, where they can use the skills they have been learning such as haltering, giving an IV and subcutaneous shot, running a chute, etc.

We had a fun day helping all of these students and are happy they could spend a morning letting us share our cattle and our knowledge!

It can be a challenge to find new babies during ca It can be a challenge to find new babies during calving season. Moms, even young heifers, have a strong natural instinct to protect their newborns by hiding them. In those first hours and days, calves are especially vulnerable, so mama will often tuck them away in tall grass, a low spot, or anywhere that offers a little cover.

This behavior helps reduce the chances of predators spotting the calf, and it also limits scent and movement that could draw attention. The cow will stay nearby, keeping a close eye while giving the appearance of distance, returning frequently to nurse and check on her baby.

You can usually tell something is up when she’s off by herself, just a little more watchful than usual. And eventually, that calf gives it away-standing up or moving around once curiosity gets the best of it, making the hide-and-seek game a little easier for us. 👀

After preg-checking the Fall herd a few weeks ago, After preg-checking the Fall herd a few weeks ago, Kathy hauled the open cows, or the cows that weren't bred to the sale barn. Unfortunately with the little to no moisture we've gotten this year, it is hard to take a chance on keeping the cows another cycle due to the lack of grass we're anticipating on having to feed them this year. With the United States being at the smallest cow herd size in the last 75 years, and us getting rid of cows that are young and have a lot of life left, there is a great chance that most of these cows will be bought by someone looking to take a chance on some cows to grow their herd and essentially giving them a "second life." We are always appreciative of what our cows do for us, and want nothing but the best for them!

There is no rest for the weary around here! For mo There is no rest for the weary around here! For most, the weekends are used to take a little break and get a little refresh, which is what we use them for too, but first the cows need fed! While some days we wish we could take some time to sleep in, we are thankful to be busy and to live a life that allows us to see the outcome of our hard work.

Covering feed piles with plastic might be the leas Covering feed piles with plastic might be the least fun project we do from year to year, but it's even less fun knowing we'll be pulling it off in a couple months... 😂 All jokes aside, rolling plastic back to expose more feed on the piles might happen more frequently, but it does happen to go a lot faster. As you can see with the wind and little feed that gets left on the plastic when we're rolling it back, the debris adds up and leaves us with quite the pile when we pull sheets of plastic off of a feed pile. Although this isn't necessarily a problem, it does make the plastic heavy and hard to drag around until we get it dumped off.

Kathy and Connor attended the CSU Ram's Against Hu Kathy and Connor attended the CSU Ram's Against Hunger (@csu.ramsagainsthunger) appreciation banquet in early April. We donate beef throughout the year to this amazing food pantry that supports CSU students. We are thankful to those that put together such a fun evening to show their appreciation for our support to their program. Kathy and Connor went to Ginger and Baker (@gingerandbaker), a teaching kitchen in Fort Collins, and had a great evening cooking Moroccan food. Neither one of them could have asked for a better evening enjoying good food and great company!

There’s nothing better than hearing how our beef i There’s nothing better than hearing how our beef is being enjoyed around the dinner table. One of our customers reached out after cooking some Christensen Ranch New York Strips on his @pitbossgrills smoker, and this is what he had to say:

"I just smoked some NY Strips on my Pit Boss and they are outstanding. I was going to make some sides also, but before I knew it, I was finished with the steaks. I can't get over how delicious these are." - Bryan Zima

We sure appreciate feedback like this. It means a lot to know the beef we work hard to raise is being enjoyed just as much as we hoped it would be.

Thank you for choosing us as your ranchers.🥩

A little over a week ago Em, Kirsten's mare, welco A little over a week ago Em, Kirsten's mare, welcomed a sweet filly into the world during the middle of the night. Not only does Em love her new baby, but Kirsten is pretty smitten over the newest addition to her herd. She is very excited for this little one's future, but in the meantime, she is happy to watch her grow and give her some scratches when she allows the attention!

We had an abnormally warm and dry winter, but we f We had an abnormally warm and dry winter, but we finally saw some snow! ❄ Turns out we just had to wait until April to get a little moisture. The snow wasn't much, but it did give us just enough to settle the dust. Hopefully we'll see more moisture over the next few months to help the pasture grass grow and give our cows something to eat over the summer!

Every morning we walk through pens to look for any Every morning we walk through pens to look for any cattle that may look off or are starting to get sick, and because we spend so much time walking through them, they start to get used to us. Not all of them are friendly, but every once in a while we get one that is brave enough to let us reach out and pet them, or in this case, take some scratches! We like to say the fat cattle can be a little funny sometimes! 🤣
