We got a load of DDG in this afternoon, so we had to take a break from our regularly scheduled plans to get it put away. DDG stands for dried distillers grain, which is the by-product of ethanol production, when the fermentation of starch from grains (usually corn) is turned to ethanol, the reminning residue is used as a feed ingredient for beef cattle. We use this product as it is a good source of protien, energy, and other nutrients in the diet of cattle!

We're kicking off the week with a pretty busy day

We're kicking off the week with a pretty busy day getting the Fall Herd moved to the ranch, sorting calves and cows so we can precondition them, and taking them all back to our east yard. It was all hands on deck first thing this morning, using 3 four-wheelers, 2 horses, and 1 feed truck to keep all heads pointed in the right direction. While this may seem like an unnecessary amount of people, the cows and calves can get a little stressed when moving as they don't always stay together, and there are always a few head who are trying to leave and go back to where we got them, looking for their mother or baby.

We're taking advantage of the beautiful day to make some welding repairs in the feedlot. The near-daily movement of animals in and out of the chute leads to a lot of wear and tear on the welds. Add in the freeze and thaw cycles that we get in our region, and the metal will show fatigue over time. This past weekend, we had the privilege to attend the Morgan County Cattleman's Association 85th annual banquet! This year, we gathered with over 300 community members, neighbors, and friends to support local agriculture in our region. The event consists of a silent and live auction with the goal of raising funds for scholarships, participating in agricultural promotion activities, and, as we showcased a few weeks ago, taking third-grade students to the Stock Show! We've been donating a quarter of beef with the processing to the scholarship auction for many years and this year was no exception. Once the auction had wrapped up, $54,000 was raised as a result. What exactly is on Jeff's agenda for the day? Doing his best at patching together our portable corral in the field enough to get it home until we can fix it the correct way. After getting cows hauled home at the end of last week, Jeff went to bring all of our equipment home, and when putting the panels up, the angle iron that was attached to the pully broke! While this wasn't the most convenient time or place for the corral to break, at least it didn't land on anyone's toes and waited to break until we had all of the cows home. Good thing Jeff is "go with the flow" and willing to make some in field modifications when needed!

Today Jeff has been hard at work getting fence fixed at the ranch so we can bring our spring herd home as soon as possible. The cows have happily spent most of the winter on cornstalks, but with feed becoming scarce and winter weather headed our way in the coming weeks, it is time for them to come home. We will be happy to have all of the cows at the ranch as we gear up for calving season to start!
